[Updated for 2022] Seven Activities For Your Fall Bucket List

With crisp weather and foliage at its peak, fall welcomes us all with Mother Nature’s simple pleasures. As the smell of ever-ubiquitous pumpkin spice and fireplaces fill the air, the leaves start to take on their new golden-amber hues and transform the landscapes into something that can only be described as a set from a movie. There’s something incredibly cozy about this season that inevitably encourages people to get out and have a good time with their loved ones.

While the other three seasons have their own charm to offer, there’s something really special about autumn that makes it stand apart from the others. So if you are looking for fun activities that will help you get the most out of crisp autumn days, you are in the right place.

Between going apple picking with your family to rooting for your favorite sports team, there’s no shortage of fun and exciting things that you can do during the autumn. Here are a handful of our favorite autumn activities that you seriously don’t want to miss this year.

Explore a Pumpkin Patch

What is it about pumpkins that seem so synonymous with the fall season? As soon as the calendar flips over to September, it’s almost like you can find them everywhere — and for good reason, too! The spicy flavors associated with them (cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice, we’re looking at you!) are just one of the many things we love about the orange gourd.

Of course, you could just buy one at the grocery store, but why not get your own at a local pumpkin patch, instead? Grab your family and be sure to take your time to select the best one. Jack o’ lanterns, delicious pies, and even roasted pumpkin seeds are in your future.

Take a Scenic Train Ride

What better way there could be to ruminate about the changing seasons than to take a scenic train ride with your loved ones? There’s nothing more gratifying than streaming through the arresting autumn landscape, especially if you are comfortably planted in a window seat of a train that lets you gaze at nature’s beauty without missing a beat.

Sit back, relax, and take in the view as you journey through the wilderness – it’s all about savoring the small joys of life at a slower pace. Train travels are optimal for all ages, and it’s an incredible way to experience some of the country’s pastoral vistas.

Volunteer at a Food Bank

If you are eager to do your part in helping your community thrive, what better time could there be than the season of giving? As holidays approach, many charities find themselves in need of extra volunteers. So if you are inclined toward sharing some of your good fortunes with the needy, consider volunteering at a food bank or nearby soup kitchen.

When it comes to helping others, there are more solutions than problems out there. You can also start a fundraiser or do a random act of kindness that will help make someone’s day a little bit better. You may also consider donating money to a nonprofit of your choice if there’s limited time on your hands.

Have a Fall Photoshoot

Isn’t fall the prettiest season of all? If you agree with us, then you should consider taking full advantage of this season’s beauty with some fun fall family photos. A hike on your favorite trail can also double up as a family photoshoot if you don’t mind carrying some extra gear. Whether you live in a city or the countryside, there is no shortage of beautiful backdrops that can help you create memorable moments with your family.

Cheer for Your Favorite Team

Is there anything else that just screams the fall season like football? Even if you’re not the biggest fan of pumpkins and beautiful leaves, you can’t deny the fact that football season is one of the more exciting aspects of autumn. Of course, you don’t have to be the biggest lover of sports to be able to partake in the festivities — but it definitely makes it more fun!

What better way to show your devotion to your home team than going to a tailgate party? Simply grill up a few burgers, enjoy a cold drink or two, then head into the stadium for the homecoming game. The sheer energy and enthusiasm of the other fans will be more than enough to help rile you up for the big game!

Pick Some Apples

Apple pie. Apple cider. Apple donuts. Is there any recipe out there that apples don’t improve upon? We didn’t think so, and the only thing better than indulging in these fall treats is getting to pick your own. Simply hop into the car and take the drive down to your nearest U-pick orchard to get in on the fun.

There, you’ll be able to take in all the many different varieties of apples that are available — such as the iconic Granny Smith to the newer varieties, like the Honeycrisp — and take a big bite, freshly picked right off the tree. Don’t worry about picking too many, either, as delicious recipes such as apple butter and apple fritters are absolutely calling your name.

Get a Little Spooky

Of course, fall is pretty much the best time for fans of the spooky, weird, and even a little bit off-beat. If you’re a horror movie buff, you don’t shy away from jump scares, and the idea of going to a haunted house is more your thing, then you’re going to love all of the activities you can enjoy this fall that’ll get your heart racing.

Be sure to ask around to see if there are any public haunted houses in your neighborhood, as most of them will be open to guests all the way through October. If you’d rather stay in, though, why not queue up your favorite horror-movie trilogy and grab a seat on the couch? Your kids can get in on the fun, too, with family-friendly films like Hocus Pocus and Casper.

Whether you go on a leisurely drive across the alps to take in the changing seasons or want to cozy up next to the fireplace sipping some hot apple cider, there are no wrong answers when it comes to enjoying the fall season. Every city has its own way of welcoming fall, so if you are excited about having some fun this season, hopefully this list helps you in devising a suitable plan for your friends and family.
